(15) To Whiterun - Journal entry -

Sundas 30th of Last Seed 4E201

It was still dark this morning when I woke up. I warmed up some left over vegetable soup over the fire, then silently left Gerdur's house, and started heading into the direction of Whiterun, following the path along the river. I had just killed two wolves when I came across the Orc looking for an honorable death again. Since I was well rested and didn't want to listen to his babbling anymore I granted him one, wielding my ancient Nord war axe of freezing. I hope he's happy where ever Orcs go after death.

It wasn't too long when I could already see Whiterun in the distance. As soon as I reached the barren valley I took a left, passing Honningbrew Meadery. A city guard passed me and advised me not to go to Brittleshin Pass when out hunting. Well I'll keep that in mind, though in my childhood it was a perfectly safe pass to use. Perhaps things had changed.

A distant Whiterun

Meanwhile I was wondering if I could possibly buy a house in Whiterun. I had no base of operations at all, and all the things I want to save were starting to weigh heavily in my knapsack. I'm really starting to long for a place to call home, instead of wandering around like a beggar. And as far as I heard, the Jarl hadn't picked sides in the civil war, so it seems like a logical place to settle if I want to remain neutral on the matter for the time being. The guard however didn't know if there was an empty house available for purchase, let alone if my 3600 gold would suffice.

Just as I came up some farmhouses, I noticed a couple of warriors fighting a lone giant in a field of crops. Since they seemed to be struggling, I ran over and joined in on the fight, and with combined efforts the giant fell quickly. One of the female warriors thanked me and introduced herself as Aela the Huntress, and said I would make a good shield sister. When I inquired she told me they were part of the 'Companions', an order of warriors from Whiterun. She mentioned if I ever wanted to join the companions I should contact their leader, Kodlak White-Mane at Jorrvaskr.  Well, an order of warriors is right down my alley, so I'd definitely keep that in mind.

A bit later I passed a carriage, and it's owner told me a bit about Whiterun, and that I should beware of getting involved in a family feud between the Gray-Manes and the Battle-Born. He also shared that the barkeep of the 'Bannered Mare' would be a good source of further information. I suppose I was heading to the Bannered Mare then.

When I was close to the main entrance of Whiterun I talked to another guard, and he told me there was actually a house for sale in Whiterun called 'Breezehome', and I should inquire about it at the steward in the Keep. I was going there anyway to see the Jarl, so I was really starting to get my hopes up for a new home.
However when I wanted to enter the city, a guard denied me entrance because of the recent dragon threat. Once I explained I was seeking the Jarl's aid for Whiterun he let me enter though.

Whiterun

In my teens I had worked as armed escort to Whiterun a few times, but my duties had never taken me past the main gate. It seemed like a pleasant city, and I passed what looked like a vacant house on my way to the market square. I also caught a glimpse of what passers by said was Jorrvaskr, a large mead hall. So that's where I need to go if I consider joining the companions. However, I was hungry, so I first decided on entering the Bannered Mare, where I just had a nice venison steak before writing this. Since it's already well past noon I'd better go see the Jarl now while he's still available for audience. I hope I can convince him to send protection to Riverwood...
